Utility to encrypt hd

hi guys
I'd need a software that can encrypt (and decrypt) some folders in my external hd. To be more specific:
1)Since I have to use my hd with WinXP too, I want a software with a release for WinXp and Ubuntu 8.04.
2) Synchronization, when I plug the hd, it detects the folder out of date and update them.
Thank you in advance, any suggest is appreciated
