Encrypt a partition

Is it possible to make a partition accessible using a password only?

well you could set it to be owned by a certain user and then the only way to view the data on the partition would be that user (and root)

this will only work as far as the drive is in the computer. if somone takes it out and plugs it into theirs then they'll be able to access the data thru their root account

Yes it is possible to encrypt a pirticular directory or even the fielsystem. You can go to and look into "Encrypted Root Filesystem HOWTO". But wait, it will need to configuring your kernel, compile and a lot more things like this. Its not so difficult but still need to have a considrable understanding about these kinda things. It is suggested to take all data back-up before going for anything like this. Fisrt try to understand every thing and then only try.
