ubuntu x server freeze when shift+pause to invoke kdb

hi guys,

my system:

1. ubuntu 8.04 installed on virtual PC 2007; assigned 1G virtual memory
2. a working kernel 2.6.25.9 is installed, built with kdb patch kdb-v4.4-2.6.25-common-1 and kdb-v4.4-2.6.25-x86-2
3. boot with kdb=on
4. during text-mode boot, i can shift+pause to invoke kdb and continue
5. entering gnome x server, try shift+pause, system freeze have to reset

OR
5. entering gnome x server, kill the server next by $sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
6. entering text mode, invoke kdb and continue just OK

i am just wondering if anyone sees the same. if there is a solution for it, please shed any light on it. thanks very much.
