Linux kernel in Nutshell is a very good book about where to get the kernel source, how to compile it, how to pass kernel parameters etc. But if you want to understand the inside stuff of Linux kernel then you have to follow the following books -
1. Understanding the Linux Kernel, 3rd Edition, Daniel P Bovet, Marco Cesati, O'Reilly
2. Linux kernel development, Robert Love, Novell press

Another very book that I found it useful to start understanding the kernel is -
3. Understanding the Linux Device Driver, 3rd Edition, O'Reilly.

I have all the above, but nuthin beats diving into the code.
And don't fool yourself - it ain't going to be easy.

Or quick.

Go have a look at kernelnewbies.org for some good pointers.
