Kernel Panic

hi all

i've just download the new kernel source 2.6.18 from kernel.org and i'm trying to compile it, but at the system reboot, a message say:
"kernel panic - not syncing: VFS - unable to mount root fs onunknown-block (3,2)"

i use only IDE disk, so and i've compile as built in the ide disk support (BLK_DEV_IDEDISK)

my root fs is ext3 and of and EXT3_FS is compile as built in, and also RAM disk support and initiramfs/initrd are built in

..so, wher's the problem? where i'm wrong?

thanks a lot

Did you run lilo as root (su), if not do so. If that doesn't fix the problem then you will need to retrace your steps from configuration, make, make modules_install etc. Are you using initrd?
I am assuming that you have a kernel that will boot to give you access to your sytem.

I had the same problem and it was because I had not compiled in support for my IDE chipset during make menuconfig.

Check the settings under ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL Support for your particular chipset.

Without IDE support the kernel cannot run the harddisk.
