installing new kernel??

I have these directories in the CentOS 4.3 full.with kernel 2.6.9
I want install new kernel 2.6.17.11
I read instruction for that, but I cant undrestand where I do it.
so I describe some directories in my system:

/usr/src: kernels(folder),redhat(folder)

/usr/src/redhat : build, rpms, srmps, specs, sources(all of them are empty folder)

/usr/src/kernels: 2.6.9-34.EL-hugemem-i686 **** 2.6.9-34.EL-i686 **** 2.6.9-34.EL-smp-i686***(all of them are folder and have several files.and all of them have in their subdirectory: /include/linux several files(full path is /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-34.EL-smp-i686/include/linux).

and I have another linux directory at the /usr/include.and it has several files.

now I dont know where I should extract my new full source kernel 2.6.17.11
and I dont know that I linked the extracted folder(new kernel) to where??????
please guide me.

hi

Code:
cd /usr/src
tar -xf /path/to/linux-2.6.17.11.tar.bz2
cd linux-2.6.17.11
less README
Then read the README

If there is a file called /proc/config.gz then you can use that as a base .config file like so:
Code:
less /proc/config.gz > /usr/src/linux-2.6.17.11/.config
PS. there is plenty of help elsewhere on LQ for kernel compiling.
