Question .config not taken into account

Hey,

I am experiencing a strange problem.

I configured my new kernel to support netfilter (through make menuconfig)
Here is an extract of my /usr/src/linux/.config file:
Code:
# grep -i filter /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_NETFILTER=y
CONFIG_NETFILTER_DEBUG=y
CONFIG_NETFILTER_ADVANCED=y
.....
Then I launched "make && make modules_install".

I copied the arch/x86/boot/bzIMage to my /boot folder.

I configured grub.

I reboot my system using the new kernel.

However, when listing the /proc/config.gz file, iptables/netfilter are not activated.
Code:
# zgrep -i filter /proc/config.gz
# CONFIG_NETFILTER is not s
et

Am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks

Hi,

I think you forgot: make && make modules && make modules_install install

On gentoo with a 2.6 kernel, I was able to type the following:
make && make clean modules modules_install install

Hope this helps.

Hey,

Thanks for information.

I am using a hardened gentoo (means no modules).
So everythinbg is compiled directly in the kernel, or not.

And my /proc/config.gz would mention something like:
Code:
# zgrep -i filter /proc/config.gz
# CONFIG_NETFILTER=m
when I have
Code:
# zgrep -i filter /proc/config.gz
# CONFIG_NETFILTER is not set
It seems there is a config file somewhere that is used instead of my /usr/src/linux/.config and asking a different config of the kernel.

Being a gentoo user I suspect you have experience using linux... still, have you made sure where your /usr/src/linux link is pointing to? Too easy to compile for another kernel

What about the tailing install. Did you try compiling with the above string of commands? It will ignore modules if there are none so it sould be fine for you.

Best of luck.

I don't have my machine here, so I can't answer the first part.

I followed the Gentoo Hardened user guide, which says make && makes modules_install.
However, you are right, I should try the whole "make && make modules && make modules_install install" command. It should not change anything.
