Compile Kernel 2.6 on ESX Server

hi,
i have ESX Server 3.1 , i'm install debian sarge with kernel 2.4
after that i'm compile kernel 2.6.18 on the debian .
but when i'm boot with new kernel i have this error :

umount: devfs: not mounted
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 432: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

i'm test new kernel in the other system ( not in the ESX Server )
the kernel is normal boot with out any error .

please help me what i need to do ???

The problems started much earlier. The messages just show the end... Look for something about failed mounting of / (root). It may be that you do not have support for the filesystem your / is.
