Cannot successfully compile a bootable kernel...

Hi all--

I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 on a Dell 8200 which is a P4 1.9Ghz cpu, 512MB of RDRAM and an ATI 9800pro. I wanted to compile my own kernel 2.6.20.1. I've quite successfully compiled kernels for my other PCs before, but this is a new one and my first intel.

Anyway, my first kernel had most features that I wanted compiled in, networking, sound, firewire, usb, framebuffer, etc etc. But for some reason, unlike my AMD cpu, the kernel would hang immediately after.
"Freeing unused kernel memory: 178k"

So I found out that it's likely init hanging.

So I tried running a minimal kernel. I turned off all unnecessary things like sound, firewire, usb, loadable modules, etc etc etc. Essentially leaving just a few things like processor type, IDE/ATA-2 support so I could read my harddrive. Then I would at least progress to
"Freeing unused kernel memory: 180k" (the number went up =)
"Init: Unhandled Exception: Address family not supported by protocol"
and then it hangs.

I then disabled a few more things and was left with
"Freeing unused kernel memory: 180k" (the number went up =)
"Init: Unhandled Exception: Function not implemented"
and it hangs there.

Here's my current .config if it helps any.

I'm not a expert but have you done something like bootsplash.xpm.gz >> /boot/initrd that had my kernel crashed but this is not necessary to have a splash screen it also works without to do so, but by me it ended in a kernel panic
I downloaded linux-source-2.6.18 from debian unstable which compiled fine also with applying linux-patch-bootsplash
I don't think that you have a need for this option, but I don't know if that's the problem CONFIG_BROKEN_ON_SMP=y

Thanks for the help...
well I got fed up with ubuntu 6.10 and went back to slackware 11. The exact same kernel source tree with the exact same config booted fantastically. Ubuntu must have had some funky init stuff that required kernel options that I didn't compile in or aren't supported in the 2.6.20.1 release...even when I used a .config from the debian kernel generated by make oldconfig.

Although slackware can get a bit frustrating to setup...I never had weird, inexplicable problems with it.

Again, thanks for the help!
