I posted this at the Gentoo forums but no one had an answer there, so I'll ask here. It's probably not a Gentoo-specific error, anyway.
(I'd add a link, but I can't, having less than five posts and all. It should be easy to find there, though.)
In the installation guide, it said I might need to put

"none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0"
in my /etc/fstab, so I did.
The first time I booted after installing and configuring everything, I got the error:

Mount point /proc/bus/usb does not exist
and my USB did not work.
I figured I didn't need to have the line there, so I commented it out. The error is gone, but my USB still does not work. This message shows up in dmesg, though:

usb.c: registered new driver hub
The KDE Control Center shows nothing under USB devices.
