Unhappy Problem with USB controllers and USB CD-Writer

Hi,

I am trying to get my HP 8200 CD burner working under 2..4.21 but have encountered some problems.

After mount usbdevfs, I list /proc/bus/usb and find
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 26 10:40 devices
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 26 10:40 drivers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is obviously no numbered directory for any USB controller.
I try to trace down the problem by looking into the kernel log (dmesg). I get:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 23:22:01 Jul 2 2003
usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled
PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:1f.2

usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports

hub.c: USB hub found

usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver

usb.c: USB bus 1 deregistered
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:1f.4-0 address 1
usb.c: USB bus 2 deregistered
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Linux recognizes 2 usb controllers. usb-uhci deregisters them, though.
What's gone wrong?

Thank you!
