Question Will DVD R/RW work in Linux?

Hello,

Will DVD burners work in Linux?

If so, what format will Linux support?

What brands does Linux support?

What model does Linux support?

Note: RedHat 8-9 is my OS.

I understand Sony has a model that will support both competing formats for about $250.00. Anyone have experience with this dual format player/burner?

Thanks

yes, they will work in linux

I have a NEC DVD RW+ it works fine I have not yet written to a DVD though, but I have used it to write cds audio cds and vcds just fine.
RedHat 8 and 9 both used the samsung cd rw setupu for it automatically.

Thanks for the info jchristman.

Did the RH 8 and 9 pick up the player through the kudzu utility at start up or did you have to install some drivers through some process?

To all:

Anyone else use any other brands other than NEC?

It found the device on startup. I did not have to do anything.
Although it is just for the CD part of the device. I still need to find the correct driver and burning software to be able to burn DVD's.

You can use cdrecord but you need to patch it to write DVDs.
