What's a good recordong audio card for a linux laptop?

Hi. I'm wanting to do a project this quarter with programming audio (recording, midi) in Linux, but my laptop sound card isn't supported very well. Does anybody know a good USB/Firewire/PCMCIA soundcard that's fully supported in Linux? I am seeing a lot of PCI choices, but I'm not sure about the other ones.

How much you want to spend? If you want high end, look into M-audio or RME Hammerfall. Tascam has some cheaper stuff that can work with Linux with some patience or persistance rather. I have a Tascam U122 that I use with my Debian laptop. I like it.

How are you using your Tascam us-122 on your laptop? I would love to get this working.I am using a DELL Lattitude. When I go to the properties of the sound card it says midi devices : NO MIDI IS CONFIGURED

I was only able to get it consistently working using the Planetccrma repos and FC4 & FC5. I had it working with debian but it only worked until they started using udev and then it puked and I was never able to get it working again. With FC 5 I had to do a bit of tweaking due to udev not picking it up correctly, but fortunately I used the howto in the link below and it worked perfectly. That being said I never tried the midi ports on the u122 as I strictly use it for recording guitar and bass.
