vsf unable to mount root fs

i was upgrading to ubuntu 16.04 and my computer crashed in the process. I get a vsf error: unable to mount root fs on unknown block. i forget what i did to get another message that says can't find boot/grub.

for some reason a boot/grub appeared on a memory stick.

i have tried to reboot from a complete and the partial memory sticks but nothing is happening.

what to do please

You need to be more specific on what "crashed" means in this case. Was this a power outage, lightning strike or something of that nature?
Did the upgrade just freeze? Do you have any Linux Live CD to use to try to repair or access the partitions? Was Ubuntu the only OS on the computer?

Thank you. It crashed while installing an upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16..it didnt even stay on.
Yes i had a live usb but it wouldnt read my usb drive.
A friend ran some memory test on it and iit started right up... A bit frustrating since that would have been furthest from my mind.

Why would it separate the boot/grub/ to an external memory card?? That was weird.
