i put this line in the /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
ao=alsa:noblock:device=hw=1.0
and that made the usb speakers work in Mplayer, but nowhere else, how do enable usb speakers everywhere in Ubuntu. Thanks in advance.
If you're using gnome, try in Control Center("gnome-control-center") changing:
in "GStreamer Properties" the "Default Output"
in "Sound"->"Devices" the "Sound Playback" and "Default Mixer Track"
Then maybe on in "KDE Control Center"->"Sound & Multimedia"->"Sound System",
In the "Hardware" tab change the "Select the audio device".
And make sure Alsa is configured to deal with usb speakers. I never had usb speaker, so I'm not sure how to do it, but you can look it up in the alsa manual/homepage/forums.
