USB mouse problems

I'm using Belkin Optical USB/PS2 mouse with 5 buttons (with USB to PS/2 adapter, that came with it, being lost)
In my XF86Config I told the mouse to use "imps2" protocol and "/dev/input/mice" device. When my machine boots up it reports no errors, but when I run "startx" command it displays this error:

(EE) Mouse1: Unknown Protocol "imps2"
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Mouse1"

k, just noticed that it should be imps/2 instead of imps2, changed it to that and the gui booted up, but the pointer won't move, it just stands in the center of the screen, and the red led that glows on the optical mice is off. Is this a problem due to absense of the needed modules for the mouse?
