I am having the exact same problem and after a little searching, this is what I found.
In the
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit system boot script, I looked under
Initialize USB controller and HID devices
and I found code that basically said: If USB is present, attempt to load USB keyboard and mouse modules.
Since I recompile my kernel, these modules no longer exist and USB support is directly compiled into the kernel.
So I believe the only way to fix this problem is to modify some lines in
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

All I can say is RedHat is becoming more and more lazy (and stupid) with each new distribution they release.

Many people say that RedHat 9 is looking more and more like winXP, and I agree
RedHat 9 is looking and functioning more and more like winXP.
