I have concluded that my Redhat 9 system hates me. Previously, I have had a nightmare trying to figure out why on bootup it keeps telling me that it cannot modprobe usb hid, mouse, and keyboard, after I recompiled the kernel, and shut those things off. But why is it still searching for those modules when my mouse and keyboard are clearly not usb? (They're the circuler things, PS/2?)

So I turned those things on, and the bootup complains no more. Then, I decided to access the linux machine using WinXP's Hyperterminal and Hummingbird Exceed (X terminal emulator) (I have winxp on another machine), therefore saving space on my desk without having two sets of monitor/keyboard/mouse, so I disabled the kernel modules for any mouse or keyboard. Bootup works fine, but during shutdown, I get this problem:

Shutting down console mouse services: [FAILED]

What is going on and if this message, then why not a bootup message? And if anyone knows, why do I still need to compile modules for usb mouse and keyboard even if i don't use them?

I am having the exact same problem and after a little searching, this is what I found.

In the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit system boot script, I looked under Initialize USB controller and HID devices
and I found code that basically said: If USB is present, attempt to load USB keyboard and mouse modules.

Since I recompile my kernel, these modules no longer exist and USB support is directly compiled into the kernel.
So I believe the only way to fix this problem is to modify some lines in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit


All I can say is RedHat is becoming more and more lazy (and stupid) with each new distribution they release.
Many people say that RedHat 9 is looking more and more like winXP, and I agree
RedHat 9 is looking and functioning more and more like winXP.
