USB mounting problem (solution)

PROBLEM:
I am always able to successfully mount a USB device via KDE automounting, using the "mount" command, or using the "pmount command" the first attempt after system boot.
I've got the /etc/fstab written correctly, and everything works as it should for the first mounting after bootup.
However, on one of my systems, subsequent mounting of a USB device fails:
In the KDE environment, nothing happens.
via "(p)mount" I get the following error:
"mount: special device /dev/sda does not exist"
I'm certain that some readers have seen this message.
SOLUTION:
Normally, I'd reboot and everything would work OK, I'd be able to successfully mount the USB, after the reboot.
Today I got stubborn and refused to reboot
After some thinking, reading man pages, and drinking coffee, I discovered that "udevd" wasn't running.
#: /etc/init.d/udevd restart
fixed that and everything is now happy happy joy joy with mounting the USB.
