USB compact flas memory works ONLY if plugged in at boot

hey everyone,
im using slack 10.0, dropline gnome 2.8.0 , kernel 2.6.8.1, with hotplug support starting up at boot time...
anyway im able to mount my USB CF card reader ONLY if the card is in the reader at boot time...(/dev/sda)
if i plug the card into the reader after the system is fully booted up, and try to mount using the exact same commands, i just get a

'/dev/sda not a valid bloack device'

help!

Did you remember to umount it before mounting again?

Is it /dev/sda1?

sometimes it's the obvious stuff, ya know.

seems to work ok now...i didnt do anything different...then again i might be hallucinating..thanx!
