Usb adsl modem/router


i have huawei mt882 usb modem (router actually!).
i have installed usb drivers for it in linux.
now how can i detect it and designate it as ethX??
wud upgrading to kernel 2.6.17.4 help?
where can i know the features of these kernels?
I dont have a network card. I have intel 915 chipset with on-board LAN.
can i connect this modem to any ethernet port??

I would connect it to the intel nic. It would be easier to do. Then configure the intel nic to do as needed.

on-board LAN = Network Interface Card (NIC)

Look in back of the computer (perhaps side if it's a laptop). If you see something that looks like a oversized phone jack, that's the NIC.
