upgrading ram to 1.5G, redhat linux ES 3.0 doesn't recognize??

I added another 1G of RAM on my x486. Running 'free', linux is only recognizing the initial 512K.
I tried the himem option in the configs but this didn't seem to work. I guess I will need to recompile the Kernel to set himem option but I'm not sure how to do this with all the RPMs that RedHat Enterprise Server v3.0 uses. Has anybody done this successfully?

Thanks,
