Unable to mount CD on USB Hub

OK... I am new, but I am getting the hang of things. Still, I cannot see ANY way (using GUI) to install a CD-RW drive which I have connected via a USB hub. (Actually, even when it is plugged directly into the machine - a Gateway Solo 5300 -- it is the same situation.) I am running Mandriva 10.1. If there is no GUI way of doing it, I am getting familiar (in a newbie way) with the command line, and ain't afraid to learn. So, whatever you can tell me is surely welcome.

Thanks!

When you plug it in, type "dmesg".
It should say disk found on /dev/sda or something
then you type...
mount -t iso9660 /dev/sda /mnt/cdrom

and it should be on /mnt/cdrom (create it first if you don't have it)
