probably u have to modify the config file for your monitor. this might be
/etc/X11/XF86Config
Depending on the distro u use there may be tools for the job available too. SaX or SaX2, Yast on Suse for example. RedHat comes with such a tool too but i dont know its name, sorry
good luck

Yes, the file that contains the configuration of your monitor is normally /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on Red Hat and SuSE.
Considering that Red hat did not run Kutzu (? is that how it is spelt???) at first startup with your new Dell monitor worries me a bit. It may not have a driver for that particular model, so do some research and find out what frequencies the monitor uses (normally in Hz and kHz), then find a driver that uses the same frequencies or something close to it.

If you do have problems editing in text mode, use Knoppix or a similar live CD to do it in GUI mode. Once Knoppix is loaded, it will display all the logical drives as hard drive icons. The file is then only a few mouse-clicks away.

Good luck!

You may want to try the following information that I found. Pay particular attention to what it says about putting your monitor in a default 640x480 mode. I did this and "voila" the monitor came back online. Albeit in 640x480 but hey, at least it let me into my GUI desktop. Here's the Link:

http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/wessels_sax247.html

and all the "SaX2" commands are on it. I know this is from a SuSe web site but if memory serves me correctly from my Red Hat days, SaX2 is in your distrobution as well?

Sax2 (from XFree 4.0)

Options
Sax2 offers a number of possibilities to circumvent possible problems with various parameters. The most important options are as follows:

sax2 -l = Starts Sax2 with 640*480@60Hz. DDC probing is
disabled. This option is very helpful in case your
monitor shuts down as Sax2 starts or your screen is
black.

You'll want to run in "safe settings" mode if your distrobution has one and when you finish logging on as "root" type in at the prompt:

init 3 (Runlevel 3 in SuSe Linux)

This init level will allow you to run the above listed SaX2 command and should put you into 640x480 mode (life saver mode for me..=)

Good luck!
