Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

trouble with intel pro100

Please bear with me as I am a real linux newbie. Have installed fedora c6, everything OK except my network card. It is an Intel pro 100. Linux recognises this , module e100 is loaded, hardware detected but when I go into the network window to activate I get the following error message:
Determing IP information for eth0....failed
I would appreciate baby steps to try and resolve.

BTW I have a LAN set up with three MS comps plus the Linux box, connected through a switch to my adsl modem.

TIA

As root try editing the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX file for your Ethernet card and add a line that specifies the routers internal IPaddress. I do not think that you really have a switch but more likely a cable/DSL router, but I could be wrong.

GATEWAY=<the router's internal IP address here>

You might have to create a file named resolv.conf in the /etc directory which has the DNS information you can get from the router or your ISP, sample below;

nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
nameserver <the router's internal IP address here>

You only need one in the file, if you have to guess then choose the last one.
