SuSE 9.0 Pro Speed enhancement

I have just upgraded from a PII 400, 192MB RAM, TNT2, with a 4.3 GB HDD to an AMD 750, 512MB RAM, Gforce ti4200, with a 40GB HDD. I've seen no speed improvement when opening apps OOo, Firebird, etc. This is on SuSE 9.0 pro running KDE 1.3? (I'm on the road, can't check for sure) Boot is probably 10-15 sec quicker, Blender looks a little better and racer is now too big for the screen.

Also the 128MB video card is bing seen as a 64 megs. Probably to do with my K7V mobo being 4x AGP and not 8X?

Ive been searching for a while for a "tips and tricks" to streamline linux and haven't been able to find anything.

I'm very willing to read and follow if there is a URL someone can point me to on this/these issues.

Thanks much. LQ has been the biggest contributer to my Linux life, very appreciative.
