Cool Speedtouch 330 Rev.4 Silver PPPoE working fine on Mandrake 10 and 10.1

One only has to search the net to discover how difficult it is to get this modem working. After considerable research and trial, I have managed to put together a simple step by step guide that worked fine on Mandrake 10.1 and also on 10. This was performed on a new install, and was done at least twice to make sure it worked. The main culprit seams to be the kernel driver and the solution is simple (it always is once you find it). So, without further delay here is the guide one step at a time: [Needless to say that you need to do this as root]

1. Edit /etc/hotplug/blacklist and add speedtch to the end of the file.
2. Reboot. Yes, I said reboot!.
3. Install:
3.1 Name: ppp Version: 2.4.2-7mdk
3.2 Name: ppp-pppoe Version: 2.4.2-7mdk
3.2 Name: speedtouch Version: 1.3.1-1
3.3 Name: rp-pppoe Version: 3.5-4mdk
3.4 Download SpeedTouch330_firmware_3012.zip from the speedtouch site
4. Copy SpeedTouch330_firmware_3012.zip to /etc/speedtouch
5. Run speedtouch-setup --pppoe [Note: 2 dashes before pppoe]
6. Run modprobe tun
7. Run speedtouch-start

That's it; if all went well, you should be looking at something similar to this:

[root@localhost root]# speedtouch-start
Starting ADSL connection...
using channel 1
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2

remote IP address 213.13.208.1

[root@localhost root]#

If you want the connection to start up everytime you boot, then add speedtouch-start to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Good luck!

Same problem here.

I doubt it has anyhting to do with the connection itself - I disconnected the adsl cable and got the same result.

If you run speedtouch-start again after exiting ( ctrl-c ) the script tries a different channel.

What do these channels refer to, I don't know...?

Any help appreciated!
