Question SoundCard problem (newbie warning?)

Heya guys...

I got a computer with a fresh install of RedHat 7.3 here... Installation went just smooth and it booted without any errors that I managed to see (all green "OK" in the boot).

But as soon as KDE3 has loaded when I logged in I get this error message:

Informational - Artsmessage

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
Device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null outåut device

Obviously it cannot find my SoundCard (a SoundBlaster 128PCI that is working fine in Windoze). No sounds will work, which I'm not really surprised by.

I will await any suggestions/ideas of how this might be solved as I'm quite new to Linux and I got no clue of how I could "reinstall" the soundcard to maybe get it working.... Meanwhile I wait I will reinstall Arts and see if it will solve my problem... if it does I'll let you know...

Thanks in advance!

Press ctrl-alt-F1 to access a virtual terminal, then login as root with your root password.

Then run sndconfig, and hopefully Red Hat will set up your sound card for you.

You can then press ctrl-alt-F7 to access X-Windows (i.e. KDE) again - logout and then login again and things *should* work.

Thanks for your quick reply....

I tried it out and it found an Ensoniq card which it says is disabled but might be able to work if I set PnP OS to "no" in my BIOS....

In KControl under Information -> PCI it says it finds a Sound Controller of the type Ensoniq and Subsystem states "SoundBlaster", so it might work.... I will try the BIOS change...

Another thought is that it might be an IRQ conflict that shows in WIndows between the internal modem and the soundcard... So I will also try to yank out the modem (which I won't be using anymore anyway) and see if that solves it....

Thanks for your assistance, I'll be back if I need further help... feel free to post more ideas/thoughts if you got any

Edit ->

oh.. btw... When I shut down I get a [FAILURE ] on "Trying to save mixer settings" or something like that.... But it seems a bit obvious as the soundcard won't work...
