Sound Question...

This is strange...I've finally gotten my sound to work fairly good through linux, now theres only ONE issue, yay, lol

anyways, what happens is thru the front left speaker, theres a slight crackle in all songs, it isn't there in any of the other speakers, so i tried changing the speaker wire over with the front right speaker, but leaving the other end in left, so this is making the front right speaker the front left, and vice versa with the left speaker becomming the right speaker, but staying in their places...and then the crackle changes over to the front right speaker (which thru the computer it thinks is the front left)...so im thinking maybe linux is pushing the front left speaker harder than the rest for some reason?

I've change the sound from only going thru the front left speaker over to the right so i can hear them by themselves, and sure enough there's absolutely no crackle out the right, but there is thru the left...

argh, any idea's?

hopefully i haven't confused you, lol

Update:

The Rear Left speaker does the same thing whyyyyy would the left side of the speakers be crackly yet the right isn't? (and same even when i switch the wires over to make the right speakers the left speakers, so its not the speakers that are stuff, nor the wire...)

what kind of sound card do you have? it might depend on how many channels it has...i know when i play dvds that use Dolbly Digital Surround Sound 5.1, there is a lot of crackle in the speakers...and i have a feeling its my sound card, because its only a 4 channel sound card. i know some are 1, some are 4, 5 and even 6. find out how many channel you have on yours...that MIGHT be the problem....anyway what kind of set up do you have for your speakers? how many do you have and stuff?

I've had a fair bit of trouble setting up the soundcard in linux.
The sound card is Hercules Fortissimo II...its a 4.1 sound card, the system is only 4.1 (Logitech Z-560's, 4 speakers, 1 sub)..

The module i use is CS46xx. and i don't load artsd when KDE loads because WineX advised me to disable this (this also got rid of a fair bit of other 'crackles' in lower quality sounds...so without artsd it seems to have helped a little...apart from this little crackle in the left hand side of the system seems to have picked up...it doesn't happen in winblows, so it can't be any connections or anything...

hehehe

I get this problem with my Gamesurround Fortissimo 2 Digital also, at least its not as bad as the 1 sound at a time problem with my on board C-Media

If I lower the PCM to about 80%, its fine, as I have a powerful amp anyway, but I really wanna use the S/PDIF output

I am using the ALSA drivers as these work with ARTS and OSS, plus I can use the ALSA plugin with XMMS, rids the jumpy mp3's when minimising windows etc

If anyone can help us that would be great

Thankyouuuuuu

No, audio devices does not know what speaker its connected to. Audio is just AC signals and speakers are passive device that converts the signals to sound. A speaker has the same concept as an electromagnet and pernament magnet repelling and attracting to the N and S poles.

If you connect the left channel to the right speaker and it crackles. It means you may have blown the left channel of the sound card or the module you are using is not correct. Use other amplifiers and speakers

Don't have all your volume turn to 100% because your sound card will distort. Also your speakers can also damage themselves from distortion. Distortion can overload speakers. For several years designers tried to come up with a way to make fool proof speaker protection device but they never succeded. Put all volume controls between 75% to 90%
