Unhappy Sound muted in dual boot system XP/Redhat 8.0

When I'm working in Linux, the sound is configured properly but when I boot into XP, it's like the system has gone to "sleep" and the sound is disabled. If I just ignore it for a couple of hours, then lo and behold the sound comes on almost deafening me.
Now it's been two days and there hasn't been any sound on start-up of XP. This happened to me in Linux way back when after I installed it but I tweaked the settings to get it to work while XP was unaffected. I am using the Creative's Soundblaster Live Platinum Series card. Shall I look for drivers or update the BIOS on my Via chipset? I disabled the on-board sound.

Thanks!
