Angry Sound Card

HI,
I have a very strange problem playing sound from my Mandrake Linux9.1. The OS would play music from the CD-rom but not play anything from the hard drive. Can anyone help me figure out whats the problem?
Thanx

A friend of mine had the same problem a while back, he was able to listen to music through cdrom only. His solution was to check the mixer settings because by default most of the channels are muted.
