Sil 3112 chipset support

Hello,

I've found several threads on compatibility linux kernel with this chip (SATA RAID controller), but all threads are old (newest was year 2007). users reported that linux recognizes the card, but don't recognize RAID drives and so on. There was some suggestions of patching kernel and so on. Now I'm interested in support with current kernel and can't find any info. I want to buy this card, but don't know if it will be supported. I want to use RAID-1. Have you any info or reports of successfull system working with that chipset ?

Some out of the box distros do "see" the raid arrays while some may see the cards and see the drives they don't understand the array.

Supposed to be drivers from Silicon Labs out there for that card too.

Not sure it will be as good of a choice as it is a faux or soft raid card. Not a true hardware array so software controls the entire deal.

I have successfully used this chip (not for RAID though) about a year ago. But AFAIK, this chip isn't true hardware RAID, it's fakeraid instead. So, I think you'd better use software RAID, it won't be any worse than true hardware RAID.
