Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question SATA RAID0 (SIL 3112) on FC3

I am trying to get my Silicon Image 3112 SATA RAID controller working for RAID0 on FC3 (my mobo is an abit NF7-S v.2 if that is any help).

The disks are currently detected as sda0 and sda1 and not as one single disk.

Also looking at fstab it looks like the ide disk is mounted as a volume (Volume00) ... previous versions tended to mount these as ide0 etc. and I have found it impossible to dual boot using GRUB through the NTLDR bootloader.

Any ideas?

The Sil 3112 SATA "RAID" controller doesn't really do real RAID. The chip does software RAID using the software they call Medley that is embedded on the chip. Test have shown that using software RAID/LVM in Linux is just as fast as using the RAID set up on the controller, so there's not much reason to use the Medley (which is tricky in Linux).

You cannot mount from a Medley setup using Grub, you'll have to use Lilo instead.

Unhappy

Thanks hw-tph,

I guess this means I would not be able to access the current RAID0 setup where Windows is installed. That really is frustrating as it means using another IDE drive as a go between for Windows and Linux.

Thanks for letting me know.
