Setting up Radeon 9600 in Etch

I'm going through the usual hell trying to get 3D rendering working with my ATI Radeon 9600 in Debian Etch.

You're using GLX instead of direct rendering. However, you still do have hardware acceleration. Run "glxgears -printfps" from an xterm to see just how good it is.

I assume that's pretty bad, how can I improve it?

It's not *terrible*--those frame rates are to be expected with a 128MB card with GLX (I only get about 100 fps on my 64MB nVidia card). It can be improved by enabling DRI in the kernel, I think (otherwise that DRI section in your xorg.conf is useless).
