it is not that windows does not support serial ata, it is that windows did not support the silicon image chipset natively.
serial ata is TRANSPARENT to the host system - meaning it appears the same as a parallel ata raid system.
also - good luck getting redhat to work.
there is a driver out - so what u need to do is download it, write it to a floppy disk, and when you install choose "expert" - then it will ask if u have a scsi driver, say yes and it should grab the driver from the disk.
I can't verify this, as I gave up on redhat back in 5.2 days, but that should be right.

Hi solar.
This thread is about SATA hard drives, your question would be better in it's own thread, or you can read some of the many questions and answers about dial up modems with a site search.
There is one from Silicon Image that requires you to have the boxed kernel version from Red Hat (kernel version 2.4.20-8) and the one on the kernel source code. To use that you should recompile your kernel, although Red Hat kernels already include that driver. The driver has better performance with the kenrel 2.4.22/2.4.23-pre4 kernels.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one in this boat. I'm running a Seagate ST3120026AS on a Siimage 3112 controller integrated with an Asus A7n8x (nforce2). I gave up on trying to use it with Mandrake 9.1 a while ago, since I couldnt get dma enabled (every time I tried it crashed immediately). I recently installed 9.2rc which comes with a 2.4.22 kernel. DMA seems to be working now but, I get random lockups which seem to be associated with heavy disk access. I also tried the Mandrake contrib 2.6.0test5 rpm which didnt seem to fix things either (didnt even make it all the way into kde this time). One thing I did notice on boot though is:
hde: ST3120026AS, ATA DISK drive
blk: queue c01815c8, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7.
I found a post on the lkml where alan cox recommends updating the bios but this didnt seem to help things either.
I'm having a slightly different problem I think (quite new at this). I have an Abit NF7-S with theSiI3112 chipset and had previously set up a Raid 0 array using 2 W-D drives under WinXP. The array is formatted NTFS. I loaded Mandrake 9.1 on a partition of what Linux would call /dev/hda and most everything is working. Both hard drives that are on the IDE channels (which are also NTFS) are seen and mounted for me automatically. And the 2 drives that make up the array under WinXP are seen individually by Linux (serial numbers show up, etc.) but not recognized as a Raid array. I have tried mounting /dev/hde (the other one is /dev/hdg) but get an error about wrong fs, supermount, bad block or too many drives mounted.
What I want to do is be able to continue to use the array in Windows as a read/write, and (for now) I'de be happy to just read from it in Read Only mode in Linux (I have a ton of DivX and MP3's on it). I know better than to try to write to an NTFS partition from Linux. How would I go about getting MDK9.1 to recognize that these two drives are part of a Raid array???
Hello everyone, I am new to Linux, so please be gently and over-explain everything for me.
I read this entire thread (and others) but am still having trouble.
I am trying to install RedHat 9 on a Supermicro X5DAL-TG2 motherboard with dual SiI3112A SATA controllers.
I followed both the instructions on the Redhat linux drivers located here ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/driver/SATA.../Linux/Redhat/
and tried the drivers from SiI thmselves.
Neither work.
When I install do the
" linux dd hde=noprobe hdg=noprobe hdi=noprobe hdk=noprobe "
as per the instructions, but then once it gets to looking for drivers, it says none found, so I say look on floppy, and it searches it, but then says none found.
So I choose manual, choose the driver, but then it says no driver loaded...
I tried over and over, but the same result every time!!
I must be doing something wrong, just dont know what.
I even tried saying OK.. and going past no driver loaded, but then (of couse) no HD's are found.
Please, if someone could give me detailed (and I mean detailed) instructions on how to install RedHat9, I would be forever in your debt.
The HD's being used are 2SATA Maxtor 120GB, trying for a Striped Raid.
i was just wondering before i take on hand on my new server to be delivered to me next week, it has Asus P4P800 MB with intel 865PE chipset with an integrated ICH5R SATA Controller and a SATA Seagate Barracuda HD on it, and i'm planning to install redhat 9 just wanna ask if im goin to have a problem on the ICH5R SATA Controller in linux? as i can see on this thread alot of people are having problems on the silicon ATA controller that is why i decided to change my motherboard
