Scanner part of HP LaserJet quit working after install of Ubuntu 22 lts

I've been unable to use the scanner part of my HP LaserJet for some time now. I rarely use it, so I haven't aggressively tried to get it to work. But from time to time, I do want to use it, and can't. It worked fine with previous versions of Ubuntu, but 6 months or so ago when I went to Ubuntu 22, it stopped working. Printer part still works fine.

I made a post in the Ubuntu forum & have yet to get a solution there, but if anyone wants to try to help me and review what I have tried over there, here is the link to that: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2478566

p.s. the only part I didn't try is to buy some driver tha that someone suggested might fix it....

Just to say that I've a HP Laserjet Pro MFP M130 and the scanner part died very young. The printer is networked and scanning initially produced a hardware I/O error but now does nothing.

Ubuntu contains hplip which is used to set up the printer using "hp-setup"

A gui for that can be installed with 'apt install hplip-gui'

Configuring the printer also asks if you want to install the proprietary plugin which is required for use of the scanner.

When system upgrades are performed and the version of hplip is upgraded then it is mandatory that the user also update the plugin manually to match the installed version of hplip. If the update of the plugin is not done then the scanner cannot be used. Manual update of the plugin is required since the plugin is proprietary even though the rest of hplip is open source.

To update the plugin to match hplip use the gui or run "hp-plugin" at the command line.
