What is the model of the printer?

Are you using the correct HPLIP driver for it?

Thanks.

I've had several HP Office Jets and used them with multiple distros and not had any issues with the scanner, but I'm not up to that version of Ubuntu yet. I'm fresh out of ideas, but I'll try to throw Ubuntu v. 22 into a VM and see if I can duplicate the issue.

I installed Ubuntu MATE v. 22.04 in a VirtualBox VM. After updating it to the latest software, I configured my printer (an HP Office Jet 6962) using hp-setup. I was able to print a test page and scan a document using the scanning utility included in the distro.

To put it another way, I don't have a clue what's causing your issue.

I'm sorry.

How is the printer connected? Usb or wifi?

If usb, is the package ipp-usb installed? There was a version of ipp-usb that interfered with usb connected printers using the drivers from hplip and removing the ipp-usb package solved that.

Otherwise I have seen some cases where the configured printer had to be completely removed in the system, reboot, then reinstall the printer with hplip to get it to work properly.

Thanks for your reply.
It is connected via USB. I checked with Synaptic package manager, and ipp-usb version 0.9.20-1 is installed.

addendum: upgraded to latest version and tried 3 different scan programs

p.s. Is it possible that I should try the latest version of hplip

kernelhead,

Try installing simple-scan, if you have not already done so:

Code:
sudo apt install simple-scan
It will be listed under Document Scanner or similar. I use Linux Mint 21.

I have the "HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn" printer, connected wifi with hplip driver, and it works wonderfully with scanning.

It is mandatory that the driver match the kernel and that the hp plugin match the hplip version. I use sane for scanning and have libsane-hpaio installed as well so that sane recognizes the printer properly.

My system shows 3 different configs for the scanner on the printer and I do not ever use the airscan:... or the ipp configured interface, but only the one I set up manually with hplip (hpaio:...)

I have ibsane-hpaio installed, but perhaps it's the wrong version?

On my system the versions of hplip and libsane-hpaio are identical. If they do not match then performance may be suspect.

Also, the HP plugin for the scanner must be installed to match the hplip version or it will not work. The command "hp-plugin" will take care of that for you.
