SBLive 5.1, rear speakers don't work

I have a SoundBlaster Live 5.1 card and 4.1 speakers. I'm using kernel 2.6.5 and the ALSA EMU10K1 driver in the kernel. I can't get surround sound though. It seems to treat it as two sets of stereo speakers, both "front" speakers. When I use this command
speaker-test -c 4
the "front left" comes from both front left and rear left. "Front right" comes from both front and rear right, and for rear left and right there is no sound at all.

Have you set the appropriate settings in alsamixer?

I don't know, there's so many controls and I don't know what they all mean. I have turned up things that have something about "surround" in their name.
