SBLive rear out ... lack of !

hi, I've just installed alsa drivers for my sblive 5.1 card, all went well and I'm now listening to my mp3s in better quality sound than before, but ..... with one noticable difference ... no sound from my rear speakers ? I thought this could be changed by using alsamixer, but I find no level for it in the list ? what am I doing wrong ?

I found an example in /usr/share/alsa/pcm so I now have this in my .asoundrc file ...

Code:
pcm.emu10k1 {
	type hw
	card 0
}

ctl.emu10k1 {
	type hw
	card 0
}

pcm.!surround40 {
	@args [ CARD DEV ]
	@args.CARD {
		type string
		default {
			@func getenv
			vars [
				ALSA_SURROUND40_CARD
				ALSA_PCM_CARD
				ALSA_CARD
			]
			default {
				@func refer
				name defaults.pcm.surround40.card
			}
		}
	}
	@args.DEV {
		type integer
		default {
			@func igetenv
			vars [
				ALSA_SURROUND40_DEVICE
			]
			default {
				@func refer
				name defaults.pcm.surround40.device
			}
		}
	}
	@func refer
	name {
		@func concat
		strings [
			"cards."
			{
				@func card_driver
				card $CARD
			}
			".pcm.surround40." $DEV ":CARD=" $CARD
		]
	}
}
still dosnt seem to work though I still cant see a rear out level in alsamixer
