running an scsi tape drive and cd burner

i happen to have a conner ms2000dat scsi tape drive and i'm running ubuntu 7.10 and it doesnt show up in the computer as connected but in the kdat program it sees the drive but then when a tape is inserted it wont mount the tape and then it tells me the drive is reading or being used and to wait till its done and try to mount again what can i do. also i have an external scsi burner and it is a glyph case with a philips cdd 2600 burner in it how can i configure the computer to see both drives or make it so i can use one drive or the other?

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

I assume that all of the modules are loading i.e. SCSI controller and all of the SCSI subsystem modules. Check them via the console command lsmod. Post the output.

I've never used Kdat but tapes are not mounted. They are basically written to and read from like an ordinary file stored on the hard drive. You can check the status of the tape drive via the console command mt.

mt -f /dev/st0 status

CDROM devices are assigned device IDs /dev/scdx (where x starts at 0) Devices are assigned in order of being recognized. So if your burner is the only device it will be /dev/scd0.

BTW make sure that each drive has a unique SCSI ID but do not use 7. Also make sure the last device in the chains termination switch is set to active.

Not sure of your experience level with SCSI devices so please do not take offense with some basic questions.
