RS-485 / RS-232 problem, how to solve?!?

My software controls a device (Rayon Serial Port device) through RS-232.
I use the following cmd to create the special file to it:

mknod tty81a c 19 16

I have a deamon that reads/writes to this device, and there are some scripts who write to this device. However, there is a problem that sometimes occur and sometimes not.

I wonder, is there any way to scan/monitor the data that goes over this line? So, create a logfile with all the data...

Please also reply if you would like to know additional information...

Hi,
You sound like you can decrypt this page:
http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/lin...04.1/0738.html
http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/Ser...tml#serial_mon
and see
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/serial/

or
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue48/tag/52.html

Or, you can buy a 'hardware' device that sits between your serial port and the device (a protocol analyzer), expensive.
Or, and different type, http://www.febo.com/geekworks/data-capture/ (see bottom) for http://www.bb-elec.com/productlist.asp?Dept_id=161

Also, http://www.rs485.com/rs485spec.html
Are you compliant as far as data connections go? Is that really a 232 port that you connected to your computers comm port?
Are both devices (the box and your computer) using the same hardware flow control, stop/start bits, parity, etc? If not, you should see some sort of pattern to the 'disruption' for example, every 40 seconds a drop occurs. There are many help files on the net for troubleshooting serial connections.
