Resolution problem

Hi folks,

CentOS 4.4 amd64
Philips Brilliance 200WP7 monitor
ASUS EN7300 64bit 256M vedio card -nvidia chipset

My monitor can only display 800x600 dpi max because of the driver "vesa". I download nvidia driver on nvidia.com.

On installation running;

# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9755-pkg2.run

it failed on re-compiling the kernel because unable to detect kernel source. According to /var/log/nvidia-installer.log kernel-source/kernel-devel is required.

# uname -a
Code:
Linux server.satimis.com 2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp #1 SMP Tue Feb 27 09:40:21 EST 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
# yum search kernel-devel
Code:
.....
kernel-devel.x86_64 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL update
Matched from:
kernel-devel

kernel-devel.x86_64 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL installed
Matched from:
kernel-devel
kernel-devel already installed.

# yum search kernel-source
Code:
Searching Packages:
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
No Matches found
Pls advise how to fix the problem. TIA

Install the compiler and glibc libraries. You may need to tell the nVidia installer where the kernel headers are located.

Back up your X11 library directory because nVidia libraries will over write them.

With the vesa driver, you should be able to use resolutions up to 1600x1200 with out any problems. The vga driver only can go up to 800x600.

Use the utility gtf to help you create modelines. Then place them in the monitor section.

DPI is not the resolution. DPI is whole different spec. DPI for video is translated to PPI (pixels per inch), so the equation is DPI=PPI. X Window System defaults DPI to 75. Video DPI is very confusing when trying to print an image. MS Windows DPI is 96 and Mac is 72. As you can see one image will have different sizes after printing on each of these OS. It is best to use a trustworthy program to do the correct calculation and output the result to the printer.
