Removing hdb1 so Linux can boot...

Hello all!

I have a Mandrake Box with a two HDD configuration. my primary-slave drive (a 40GB Maxtor mounted to /ftp) failed last night so I removed the drive from the machine. When I rebooted, the OS drops me to a shell every time. My guess is because it can't find the file system on the drive that failed. The entire drive is one big ext3 partition just used for a small ftp server I had setup.

My question is, from the maintanence shell, what can I do to remove hdb1 from the configuration so Mandrake won't check for it on boot?

I know, it's a pretty novice question. I'm a novice kinda guy.

Thanks in advance and thanks for reading!!!

Is it complaining about the drive itself or about the filesystem (/ftp). If the latter you only need to comment out the entry in /etc/fstab so it doesn't try to mount it. (Put a "#" in front of the line to comment it out.)

FYI: You're likely in single user mode. If all else is OK you can manually mount your other filesystems so you'll have access to all your tools. "mount -a" tells it to mount everything. If you had a hard boot you may need to run fsck on the devices to mount them but if so it will tell you.

Thank you for the reply!

You are correct about single user. I'm not sure if it's complaing about the drive or the FS. Forgive me if my information is a little vague. I am away from the computer right now. I saw an entry that looked kinda like "fsck /dev/hdb1 file system check failed." Then it asks if I want to fix the errors and no matter what I choose, it drops me to a shell.

I will edit that /etc/fstab when I get home with vi and see if that does it. It might just think there is something wrong with the filesystem since its now missing.

Again, thank you for the help! I will post updates.

Thank you, jlightner!

Putting a "#" in front of the line in the etc/fstab file that defined the hdb1 mount allowed the system to boot.

Thanks again for your help!
