Just about any Lucent/Orinoco-based card, or a prism2/prism2_5-based 802.11b NIC will do just fine. However, wlan setups *do* require more configuring than a regular wired network, that goes for the NIC itself too.
Straight out of the box support for a new chipset or graphics card depends almost 100% on the hardware manufacturer, and since the Windows market is about a zillion times more profitable than the Linux market, drivers for Windows come first.
And why wouldn't you want framebuffer support? Isn't providing better performance nice?
Anyhow, the nVidia drivers work nice, and they provide ready-to-install packages on their website for the major corporate-style distributions.
