recognize USB CF reader, CD burner

I was able to use my SanDisk ImageMate CF reader and my Iomega Zip 650 CD burner with RH 9 but so far not with FC 1. Both are USB. /var/log/messages lists only starting root sessions today when I unplug/reconnect the units. Here is my fstab:

LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pt devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb3 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/cdwriter udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,rw 0 0
/dev/sda1 /mnt/flash vfat user,noauto,umask=0 0 0

I was going to include lsmod but at the moment I can't get the system to give me a root session!

For both devices, if I try to mount, I get a message that they are not valid block devices. At one point, I got an invalid medium report for the CF but can't reproduce that now.

I had to reboot in order to get a root session--most unusual!
Here is lsmod copied manually--couldn't make a transfer:
ide-cd
sr_mod
cdrom
uhci
usb-storage
usbcore
soundcore
mousedev
input
parport_pc
lp
parport
autofs
8139too
mii
ipt_REJECT
ipt_state
ip_conntrack
iptable_filter
ip_tables
floppy
sg
ext3
jbd
sd_mod
scsi_mod

I created /mnt/flash and /mnt/cdwriter early on.
