Reboot hanging after removal of cdrom

I have a tyan net appliance that I have installed
debian 3.1r0a kernel 2.4.27-2-386 onto.

As a net appliance it has no cdrom so to install the os
I removed the lid and plugged in a cdrom, and installed
debian from a cd.

I power down remove the cdrom drive re-start and I get a kernel panic
the machine hangs, I power down plug the cdrom back in and all boots fine ?

How do I tell the Kernel not to look for the cdrom?

Matt

I have had a bit more of a loook at the error and this is what is
happening.

The IDE controler is an ICH5R controller and the hard drive is an SATA
drive.

When the CDROM is installed:
hda = cdrom
hde = western digital hard drive

When dhe cdrom is removed:
hda = western digital hard drive

Now the entries in the mtab say hde for the hard drive
so the os has no hope of mounting any file systems.

If I reconnect the CDROM modify the /etc/mtab file to reflect the change in
location of the disk to hda, Will this work ??

How can I force the disk to be hde at all times??

It might be your lilo or grub that is looking for the kernel in the wrong unit or partition...

Edit:
Yes you should be able to edit the fstab but it won't help you if lilo or grub is looking for a kernel in hde...
