Question /dev/cdrom symlink GETS DELETED on reboot

So I have this CD-RW/DVD drive. I have it working fine. However, whenever I reboot, my /dev/dvd and /dev/cdrom symlinks get deleted somehow. I know, I could just have a script re-create them on boot... but I'd really like to know what's going on here. Any ideas?

I'm running debian testing, but I used MEPIS as a base for my installation... maybe some little leftover MEPIS program is doing something nasty? I simply have no idea.

Are you using devfs? Try this:

ls /dev/.devfsd

If it suceeds, you're running devfs and you may want to configure devfsd to create your shortcut. See http://www.fifi.org/cgi-bin/man2html...vfsd.conf.5.gz

You can always add a command to your /etc/rc.sysinit:
ln -s /dev/hd? /dev/cdrom
ln -s /dev/hd? /dev/dvd

Thanks for the suggestion.
Nope, /dev/.devfsd doesn't exist. Yes, adding the symlinks on boot is what I've done for the moment... but it's an annoyingly cheap little hack. I'd really be interested to know what's actually going on here.
