Razer Blade (2016) + Debain

I just got the 2016 razer blade and was really exited to install debian on it. however I tried and it could not installing grub. I then tried to install via live usb and it did not recognize the boot device. I also tried ubuntu but that did not get passed the boot screen (probably a graphics issue). thanks in advance!

Your brand new razor blade is an exceptionally nice gaming laptop!-

Do you want to dual boot Windows 10 and Debian?

I'm not sure why grub couldn't install. Did you get an error message why grub couldn't install?

In order to boot to the usb flash drive if you want to install Linux that way you will have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order. Make the first choose usb.

Is this a UEFI machine?

thank you! I am hoping to dual boot. but at least for short term I would rather have all linux than no linux. I would prefer debian but ubuntu is also OK. I can boot from the USB and install most of the way, just when it gets to the GRUB step it says it cannot install grub, and asks me to either skip this step or abort. Yes this is a UEFI machine. I am not sure what you mean by "In order to boot to the usb flash drive if you want to install Linux that way you will have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order. Make the first choose usb." I can already boot into the flash drive. thanks again!

I figured out that ubuntu is getting the error:
Code:
unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
this means that it is unable to mount the disk, probably because of the kernels drivers. I had this issue when I was making my LFS system. I do not know of a good way to fix this because I currently cannot get a live cd or os to work. thanks!

You're Welcome.

In order to dual boot you will have to shrink your Windows partition to make room for your Linux installation.

It sounds like grub is hanging up.

Did you check the integrity of the .iso file before you made it bootable on a flash drive?
The .iso file may be corrupt:-

You can try a Live CD/DVD and see if that works.

Did you disable the secure boot?

-::-You might want to burn a copy of the Windows Recovery os before you install Linux.-::-
Unless the company you purchased your laptop from already sent you the Windows disks.

You might have to install in UEFI mode.

I did make sure that my iso was not corrupt, I have tried with several iso's and a live cd. also I don't really care about windows that much. I dedicated 100gb to debian, 17 of which are swap and the rest for the actual os. I can boot to and start the installation however half way threw when it starts to install grub I get an error.

Sorry, it is a little hard to read. it says: "An installation step failed. you can try to run the failing item again form the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Install the GRUB boot loader on hard disk"

I'm not sure, but in your BIOS/FIRMWARE, do you have "legacy rom support" set to enabled? That's the error you would recieve if you attempt installation on a UEFI/GPT machine that has legacy roms enabled, as the Ubuntu boot stick will boot in legacy mode, and not be able to find a MBR to install to.

You could continue w/o the bootloader however; you will have to than download Super Grub 2 and install it via usb.
I don't have experience with installing Super Grub. I've never had to use it.

Thanks for joining the thread Timothy-

I try to join anything when I see what might be UEFI issues. I'm one of the few people on these boards that actually PREFERS UEFI to legacy mode. Many people just say "turn off uefi and boot in legacy mode", but I see that as bad advice.

Another option is to boot back to the live, use chroot to get into the installed ubunt to install grub-efi into the installed ubuntu. This is, admittedly, not the easiest thing to do, but would accomplish being able to boot Ubuntu. And wouldn't require downloading anything additional.

I remember you telling me Timothy Miller If legacy mode is active than UEFI functions are fully disabled.

Yup. May or may not be the OP's issue, but that red screen error screams UEFI system w/ legacy roms enabled to me.
