Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

RAID-1 hdisk's - need help with upgrade plan

Hi Guru's,

I've got a server running SuSE 9.x.
It's got 2x35Gb hdisks that are RAID-1 at a hardware level.

I have 2x170Gb hdisks that I would like to replace the old ones with.

I've never done this before, so I'm not sure the best way to go about it.

I have a TSM server available to me, so here's the plan I cooked up:
  • Backup the box to TSM
  • Reboot and break the mirror in the BIOS.
  • Power down (no booting up with double disks)
  • Remove a disk
  • Replace the removed disk with a new one.
  • Boot back up and use 'dd' to copy everything from the remaining old disk to the new one (can this be done while fs is mounted? boot disk?)
  • Power down
  • Replace the remaining old disk with a new one
  • *** some confusion here ***
  • a) Setup a new RAID1 config (presumably the old one will no longer work) let RAID do the rest
  • b) Use 'dd' again to populate the remaining blank HD then re-configure the RAID-1 array.

Am I anywhere near the mark?
Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
riz.

Ok,

I've done some more research and found that some RAID controllers have the ability to clone disks from the hardware... Unfortunatly this one doesn't have that functionality.

The only options I've got in the BIOS (It's a 'HP ProLiant DL360') are:
  • Create Logical Drive
  • View Logical Drive
  • Delete Logical Drive

Once I delete the logical drive, I guess there's no going back.
And I'm not sure what's involved in the 'create' process.

Would it be easier to just back it up, reinstall the OS with the same hostname and IP, reinstall 'dsmc' and restore over the top of everything?
Only problem with that plan is I'm not entirly sure exactly what version of SuSE it's running!

Please help!
