Radeon 9700 Pro 3d accel not working

I've been trying to get this working for quite some time but nothing seems to work. First I just tried enabling the acceleration in sax2. It complained acceleration can't be enabled with multihead mode. Since I only have one monitor, I removed the second monitor (Detected as unknown) and video card (detected as another identical radeon) and tried enabling again -- this time it simply said 3d/OpenGL acceleration can't work with this device.

So, I decided to try the ATI binaries. I'm running SuSE 9.1, which ships with 4.3.x xfree so I downloaded the binaries for that version, and followed the install instructions. I made sure to run fglrxconfig, and I am confident I didn't make any major screwups (for the most part I let it automatically answer stuff for me). I confirmed that it had put XFree86Config-4 in my /etc/X11 directory. I restarted X, and fglrxinfo reported that the opengl vendor string was mesa, not ati. I tried a few more different configs and tried using 640x480 resolution, because googling revealed some people had better luck with lower resolutions. No such luck for me.

I know that a change is taking effect because the resolution I pick in fglrxconfig is the one that is used. I'm running the default kernel that comes with SuSE 9.1. I only received one error in the entire installation, that is my only clue:

Code:
linux:/home/prophet/Desktop/Downloads # rpm -Uh --force fglrx-4.3.0-3.11.1.i386.rpm
########################################### [100%]
########################################### [100%]
*** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
- creating symlink
- recreating module dependency list
- trying a sample load of the kernel module
done.
/sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/X11R6/lib/FGL.renamed.libGL.so.1.2 is too small, not checked.
Installed: qt3 (gcc 3.2) based control panel application
 ===
ATI display drivers successfully installed
please run 'fglrxconfig' now
 ===
I'm not even sure that error is significant. Any ideas?

Here are the relevant lspci lines:

Code:
0000:02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R300 ND [Radeon 9700 Pro]
0000:02:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R300 [Radeon 9700 Pro] (Secondary)

Hi there. I have I using 3.7.6 ATI drivers and have that FGL.renamed.libGL.so.1.2 file. It is 446.5 Kbytes big.

But I think that your problem lies somewhere else. What I think is missing AGPGART module.
What does lsmod show ?

I had the same problem with a Radeon 9200 SE in Fedora Core 1. It kept trying to use the mesa gl driver. I finally went to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and ran make.sh. I then ran make_install.sh from the fglrx directory and completed fglrxconfig. After system restart, I had the following in fglrxinfo:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL Vendor String: ATI Technologies Inc
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9200SE Generic
Open GL version string: 1.3 (X4.3.0-3.9.0)

By the way this is the ATI proprietory driver. IT'S FREE and it works. I'm even able to play Return to Castle Wolfenstein with it.
