Radeon 9000(64mb) and linux in general

Ok, I've tried Mandrake 9.1, 9.2, and I'm using Slackware 9.1 now. I've tried installing the ATI linux drivers on all three, and yet...they don't work. I can install and configure them fine, but when I either run KDE for 5 or so minutes, or try any GL app(I always test glxgears when I get in) it freezes or the screen goes black and sits there.

I can get acceleration through DRI, but I can't use programs like XSI without the official drivers. Any tips?

Oh, I guess I should include some specs

AMD Duron 1.2 on a VIA motherboard
512 MB of RAM
Anda Radeon 9000(64 MB)
I think that's all that's relevant

I got sicken tired of all the drivers at www.ati.com and now i had a happy person again!
Go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/neofiregl/ and download that driver.
I promise it will work if you set ati radeon chipset support as modules and /dev/agp as either modules or kernel buildin.
Simply instruction for this. Just go download then uninstall the mesa driver which will be in conflict with the driver you just downloaded. Then use rpm -i <that rpm's file name>, .
Then everything should ready to go!

Hehe, Slack doesn't use RPM, but I get what you're saying
